A lack of mobility is not a reason to miss out on travel — but it is a reason for extra planning. For people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a power wheelchair is often key to independence, whether at home or away. Planning ahead and researching ways to best accommodate a power wheelchair can help take some of the stress out of your trip.
Research early for smoother travel
Part of the thrill of traveling is the anticipation and preparation of your trip. Take the time to research online, call ahead and get answers to your questions. It’ll smooth any potential bumps out of the road and enhance your travel experience.
Destination and itinerary: Research your destination to make sure it will accommodate a power wheelchair. Travelling between major cities in the U.S. will look very different from traveling to a remote locale. By planning your trip with realistic expectations, you will be more likely to enjoy it.
Hotel accessibility: Do your research and choose a hotel that has easy access ramps. Call each hotel on your shortlist and ask about ramps, door widths, door handles, bathroom access and whether the rooms have a suitable shower.
Air travel: Your power wheelchair will travel for free on the plane, but the process can be complicated. Research the airline’s policies in advance: individual airlines each have specific policies you should be aware of, such as requiring you remove or uncharge your wheelchair’s batteries before the flight. You can drive your wheelchair all the way to the plane, where the flight personnel will transfer you to a wheelchair and store your power wheelchair in the cargo hold. It will be ready for you on arrival. Make sure you call the airline at least 48 hours before to confirm the details.
Road transportation: Book ahead for a wheelchair-accessible van or adapted vehicle to meet you at your destination. How far ahead to plan varies: while large car rental companies in major cities might be able to provide an accessible vehicle the same day, requests for adapted vehicles and rental companies in smaller cities may need significant advanced notice.
